Our foot is in the door for UFC 235 and excitement is at peak levels for us all! Headlined by two blockbuster title fights between Jon Jones Vs Anthony Smith and Tyron Woodley Vs Kumaru Usman and also featuring the debut of Ben Askren, there is a hundred and one reasons why not to miss this card!
In this article we will be running through the main card match ups and giving a little summary and analysis to each. If you haven’t already check out the Preliminary Rundown which features Zabit Vs Stephens, Gall vs Sanchez and more, then please have a read to set yourself up for this rundown. So, as Mike Goldberg would say ‘Hereeeee Weeeee GO!’
Pedro Munhoz Vs Cody Garbrandt
Returning after back to back losses at the hands of TJ Dillashaw, ‘No Love’ Garbrandt is back. The former Bantamweight Champion faces Brazilian Pedro Munhoz, who has been a highly touted prospect in the division having won 6 of his last 7, he is not an opponent to be overlooked. Both fighters share an explosive striking style however, where I feel Cody edges the stand up, Munhoz ground game Is exceptional and I think if utilised efficiently.. it could be a long night for Cody.

Tecia Torres Vs Weili Zhang
#7 Ranked Tecia Torres is hungry to get back in the win column, taking on the dark horse of the Strawweight division in Weili Zhang. Zhang is a dangerously well rounded opponent, she has 18 career wins, 9 coming by TKO and 7 by Submission opposed to the more stand up orientated style Torres prefers however that’s not to say she’s too be underestimated on the ground as her only finish comes by way of submission. I see this being a very competitive match and one that could shape the path for a new contender in the division.

Ben Askren Vs Robbie Lawler
Now this is the one I cannot wait for. Undefeated former ONE and Bellator Welterweight Champion Ben Askren makes his debut against Agent 47 himself, Ruthless Robbie Lawler. Its a typical Wrestler Vs Striker match up so we can kind of get a feel of how the fight is going to play out. Ben Askren will surely be looking to grind Lawler down using his unique style of wrestling whilst Lawler, using his ruthlessly aggressive yet viciously calculated striking will be looking to pressure and catch Askren long before he can be taken down. Will Robbie Lawlers pressure and relentless strikes be too much for Ben Askren? It’s the test we cannot wait to see! I feel it’s either going to be a flash KO or a long 3 rounds.

Tyron Woodley Vs Kumaru Usman, Welterweight Championship
The war of the words will be settled with fists and elbows, It’s the fifth title defence for dominant champion Tyron Woodley as he takes on top contender Kumaru Usman. The champion is highly favoured in this bout compared to his underdog odds in his previous defence against Till, however many fans are also favouring Usman in what’s set to be an intensely close fight. Riding a nine fight win streak Usman has a good mix of power striking and well rounded wrestling which could cause problems for Woodley, he also sets out with a good game plan which will be crucial in this Title fight. Tyron Woodley on the otherhand also has power in his hands and is the perfect counter puncher, this utilised along with his outstanding wrestling and fight IQ creates the recipe which has kept him on top of the division for so long. It’s a very close contest, with two of the very best in the division and might have to be won by relying on smarts, rather than power.

Jon Jones Vs Anthony Smith, Light Heavyweight Title
THIS IS THE MAAAAAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING! David Vs Goliath, Underdog Vs Potential GOAT, The biggest upset in MMA history Vs Continued dominance. Jones Vs Smith could literally be an instant classic or a one sided domination, it’s so heavily favoured for the champion that people are actually questioning, can it really be so straight forward? The simple answer, no. Anthony Smith has 19 more fights to his record than what Jones has meaning experience is definitely on the challengers side, but Jon Jones is the man. Having been at the top of this division since he first stepped into the octagon, Jones has wowed fans for years with his dynamic striking which is perfectly blended in with his dominant ground game and is definitely going to cause Smith problems that he’s never faced before. “Lionheart” however, is the perfect nickname for Smith to bare. He is one of the toughest men on the planet, his savage strikes and proven wrestling have been problematic for most of his opponents, which is proven as he has only won by decision twice. His kill or be killed mentality combined with his respectful manner outside of the cage has made him a fan favourite and whilst the odds are stacked against him, there is definitely a massive following roaring in support for him. Even if you want Jones to win.. you can’t deny a part of you wouldn’t be happy for Anthony Smith.
