It was another bad night at the office for former Bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt, getting finished via TKO by Pedro Munhoz after an exciting back and forth scrap. Marking the third straight KO/TKO loss in a row for the former champion, fans were now eagerly speculating whether this was in fact the end for “No Love”.
On Monday however, Cody took to Instagram, feeding us exactly what we had hoped to hear.
“Kill or be killed, thats how this shit goes” captioned the post. He later added “I want to thank everyone on this journey! I love this fight game. I’m healing up and will be back soon”
After three consecutive KO/TKO losses that are all eerily similar, I feel Cody is going to have to comeback in the octagon with a different game plan than the stand and bang approach which has worked since his arrival in the UFC. Standing and banging is an approach that when used in the lower tiers of the UFC is very successful as fighters are usually of little experience so may be more susceptible to being caught out.
As time passed and Cody progressed however, it seems his fight IQ didn’t. Lets look back at his performance against Dominick Cruz for example, this showed in my opinion the peak of Codys’ evolution as a Mixed Martial Artist. Everything he did was flawless from his entire body movement to his timing and the most impressive, when to use his aggression and when to reign it back.. This is something the brace with TJ Dillashaw has impacted massively for “No Love”.
Hopefully we will see Cody back in the octagon sooner rather than later, a quick turnaround could be exactly what he needs to get himself back on form and back in the win column. Playing matchmaker, id like to see Cody face maybe John Linekar or Rob Font. Who would you like to see “No Love” face next? Do you think his aggressive style should stay or go?
