UFC 239 was already looking like an incredible card. The main event in Las Vegas on July 6 is a UFC Light Heavyweight Championship fight between Jon ‘Bones’ Jones and Thiago ‘Marreta’ Santos. Co-main is a Women’s UFC Bantamweight championship bout between champ champ Amanda Nunes and former champ Holly Holm. If that wasn’t enough, undefeated former ONE and Bellator Welterweight Champion Ben Askren will fight ‘Gamebred’ Jorge Masvidal. Now, to improve an already stacked event, UFC have announced three huge fights are to be added.
Firstly, there is a huge heavyweight title contender clash between #2 ranked Francis Ngannou (13-3-0) and #3 ranked former champion Junior dos Santos (21-5-0). Ngannou is on a charge towards the title after first-round victories over Curtis Blaydes and former champ Cain Velasquez. Former champion dos Santos is on a three-fight winning streak and has his eyes on winning back the belt. Impressive recent wins against Tai Tuivasa and Derrick Lewis show there is plenty of life left for the Brazilian at the top of the heavyweight division.
Next, former UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold (16-4-0) moves up to the light heavyweight division to challenge powerful Pole Jan Błachowicz (23-8-0). The former KSW champion is in good recent form, but will be looking to get back to winning ways after a defeat to Thiago Santos last time out at UFC Prague. Rockhold is moving up a division after struggling with weight-cuts. He will be hoping for more success in the heavier division after two defeats in his last three fights at middleweight.
Also added to the card is a potentially violent fight between the first lightweight Ultimate Fighter winner Michael Chiesa (15-4-0) and the first middleweight winner Diego Sanchez (29-11-0). This will be a welterweight fight between two octagon veterans. Sanchez, who has had mixed results for the last few years, pulled out a great performance to knock out Mickey Gall in his last fight. Chiesa is also in patchy form, but is also coming off a win. In his welterweight debut, he submitted former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit.
Welshman Jack Marshman (23-8-0) is also on the card after his controversial decision win over John Phillips at UFC London. He will be facing off against undefeated American 21-year-old Edmen Shabazyan (9-0-0) on the preliminary card.
