After Israel Adesanya’s standout performance against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236, the MMA community were quick to compare the new Interim Middleweight champion to the controversial Light Heavyweight champion, Jon “Bones” Jones. With the power of social media, it comes as no surprise that these comparisons got back to Jones himself.
Since the beginning of his career with the UFC, “The Last Stylebender” has been continuously compared to Jones, due to his long and slender frame as well as the creative striking style shared by both men.
Jones has voiced his disapproval with the comparison in a serious of tweets that have since been taken down, beginning with one fan who stated Adesanya isn’t ready for Jones yet. The light heavyweight champion responded:
Despite down-talking Kelvin Gastelum in the tweet, Jon Jones clarified he meant no disrespect towards the middleweight contender. He went on to actually commend Gastelum’s striking performance against such a talented kickboxer in Adesanya.
The light heavyweight champion concluded his series of tweets by stating he had seen all he had to see from the Adesanya “hype train”.
Before any matchup between the two can take place, Jones must get through chaotic knockout artist Thiago “Marreta” Santos at UFC 239 on June 6th, and Israel Adesanya would need to capture the middleweight title from Robert Whittaker, likely at some point in September.
