Uber driver arrested for killing former UFC fighter Rodrigo de Lima

Jefferson Roger Maciel Barata who is an Uber driver has been arrested and confessed to killing Rodrigo de Lima in a hit and run incident in Belem which occurred last Saturday night. It was reported by Brazilian website UOL on Friday.

Rodrigo de Lima competed in the UFC’s Welterweight division.

Barata, who had been an Uber driver for 5 months said in his statement to the police that the former UFC fighter de Lima had punched him after he asked him and three others too bring the tone of their voices down. The driver initially drove away but decided to come back and “scare” him but ended up killing him after striking him with his vehicle.

Barata will be charged with murder and according to UOL he has said  “I’ve always thought of a way to raise my family and not let my children grow up without a father, I feel for his family, I regret it, I’ve already asked God for forgiveness. It was one of the things I feared the most: Taking someone’s life. I started working in this job to have more time in the church, I became a director for the youth, teaching music in the church, and this ended up happening.” 

Sounding remorseful Barata goes onto say ”I’ve asked God and his family for forgiveness. It wasn’t my goal to take anyone’s life. I’ve never done anything bad to anyone. Today was going to be my wedding. I was going to start a new life, and this happened. I’ll pay for what I’ve done, and I regret it deeply. I ask his family and friends for forgiveness.”

The former UFC fighter (9-3-1) won his last professional fight submitting Luiz Fabiano in the co-main event of Shooto Brazil 85.
