Urijah Faber loses to 17-year-old Nicky Ryan at Polaris 10

Polaris 10 took place last night at The Lighthouse in Poole, Dorset on the south coast of the UK. The sleepy town played host to one of the premier Jiu-Jitsu competitions in the world, and the night of action didn’t disappoint. There were three titles on the line on the night, headlined by the Polaris Featherweight title contest between 17-year-old Nicky Ryan and UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber.

Nicky Ryan, a prodigy from the Renzo Gracie New York gym and also part of the Danaher Death Squad, may only be 17, but is already one of the finest grapplers on the planet. He pulled guard immediately and remained in control of the entire bout. Faber couldn’t get past the guard and didn’t mount a single dangerous attack. Ryan caught Faber in a deep heel hook and was close to getting the tap before Faber rolled off the mat and Ryan gave up the position.

Faber got frustrated at his inability to pass the guard and got quite aggressive in the bout. He was pushing Ryan in the throat and trying to disrupt his rhythm but it didn’t work. At the end of the 15 minute period of action, the win was awarded to Ryan via unanimous decision. There has been talk of Faber returning to UFC action when the octagon hits Sacramento in July and really, that’s where Faber’s expertise lies. He was never really in this grappling match as Ryan controlled from start to finish.

Earlier in the night, the action had seen an incredible back and forth match between Welshman Ash Williams and American Ethan Crenlinsten. Both men were on top at different points during the bout with some excellent transitions and submission defence on show. The Welshman came out on top in the end of a bout which could have gone either way.
