Duke Roufus Discusses Pettis Diaz at UFC 241

Duke Roufus has been speaking on the MMA Hour this past week discussing the upcoming bout at UFC 241 between Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and Nate Diaz. The mouthwatering grudge match between two fan favourites is slated for 17th August in Anaheim California.

Whilst speaking with Luke Thomas, Roufus said that the bout was not created in the normal matchmaking process and that they were contacted by Nate Diaz’s team.

“I think it’s been in the works for about two-and-a-half, three weeks, and the neat thing about it was Nate Diaz’s people talked to our people to put this thing together. So that’s when we knew it was that it was going to be a real fight — when they came reaching out to us. There’s been bad blood between the two guys for years, so it’s going to be a barnburner.”

Pettis has been very vocal in interviews about his dislike for Nate Diaz. It all dates back to 2014 when Pettis was coaching against Gilbert Melendez. Melendez is a good friend of Nate Diaz and Pettis said that there has been a tension between them since their first meeting.

Roufus is confident that the bad blood between the two fighters will bring out the best in Pettis.

“When people try and intimidate and get in Anthonys face, it brings him up to the challenge”

Pettis has been consistent in his interviews about wanting to knock out Diaz. And it may give him some extra confidence to know that the only person who has defeated Diaz via tko was coached by a long term student of Duke Roufus. Josh Thompson stunned Diaz with a head kick and followed up with strikes on the ground before the referee stopped the fight back in 2013.

Do you think Pettis can follow through on what he has said and record his first back to back victory since 2014? Let us know in the comments below!
