Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (25-8) will fight at Madison Square Garden this weekend against Chael Sonnen (30-16-1). The bout will be co-main event for Bellator 222 and could have title shot implications for the winner.
One thing we normally encounter during the build up to a Chael Sonnen fight is a bit of trash talking. However its been all quiet on prairie so far. The former UFC light heavyweight champion spoke with MMA Junkie and told them how he felt about Sonnen’s new approach:
“He’s very respectful of me, and I appreciate that,”. Machida continued, “But actually, I’d like him to promote the fight a little bit more, because he knows how to do that. I’m not worried about trash talk. If it’s going to be good for the fight, I’m OK, man.”
We really should not be surprised though by Chael’s lack of trash talk. Back in April he had said that he had no intention of talking trash about Lyoto Machida. When speaking with MMA News he said the following:
“I’m not gonna make it up if it’s not real…. That’s up to the promoter. If the promoter wants to get two guys in there that have a personal grudge, then he can line two guys up with a personal grudge. But Machida, he’s never been anything but a gentleman to me, to my peers. I’ve never treated him any differently. Nothing about today changed.”
