Stephen Thompson speaks on Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis and Octagon return

Stephen Thompson recently spoke to MMA Fighting at UFC 238. During the interview Thompson spoke on missing out on the UFC Greenville card, his thoughts on the upcoming Anthony Pettis and Nate Diaz fight and confirms… He would love to fight Nate Diaz!

Speaking firstly about the timeframe in which he expects to be back in action, it’s all looking good in regards to ”Wonderboy” who hopes to back in or around fall:

”I really wanted to be on that South Carolina card, me and my dad worked really hard to get them to town” He then continued ”yeah man the Nashville fight didn’t go how I wanted it too and (I) got put out so, we’re looking at probably fall, I’d love to be on that Madison Square Garden card that would be awesome, that’s kind of like like my home away from home, but having the summer off, give the brain a little heal up and the body a little heal up as well.”

Thompson is still healing from his previous bout to Anthony Pettis, where he was brutally knocked out via ”Showtime Punch”. He then went on to speak about the animosity that seems to be going on between Anthony Pettis and his upcoming opponent, returning Nate Diaz:

”Yeah man, I don’t know why, I don’t know if its the fact Anthony (Pettis) called him out and Nate (Diaz), he hasn’t had a fight in I don’t know how long.. So yeah whatever Anthony did must have lit a fire in him because he’s wanting to… you know fighting. I think it’s going to be a great fight for both of them, ill be rooting for Anthony you know because he beat me last and I’ve been a fan of his for a while now anyway. I think the only thing Nate’s got on him… He’s definitely got the reach he’s just a relentless guy, he does a lot of damage which tires his opponents, if his opponents are getting tired he just takes over so yeah, it’s going to be a good fight.”

He was then asked if his next opponent would be someone ranked outside of the welterweight top five, to which he replied:

”I was actually looking for someone in the top five to be honest with you, RDA, Ponzinibbio, I don’t know if Darren Till has anything coming up but anybody in the top group would be awesome but well see what happens.”

Darren Till is a fight that has been mentioned ever since Stephen Thompsons controversial defeat in Liverpool, England and with the UK welterweight without an opponent, it does seem possible. However when asked if he would face Nate Diaz by reporters, you could feel the excitement radiating off of ”Wonderboy”:

”Man I would love to fight Nate Diaz! Man he’s a legend of the game for sure. I think im older than him, but still man he’s a legend of the game and he’s been in the game a lot longer than I have. The dudes tough, I like his mentality, I like where his heads at especially when it comes to the art of war you know its just awesome! So that would be a very cool fight.”
