The hype and build up to UFC 239 was unlike any other card so far in 2019. Being at the forefront of International Fight Week, the promotion of the event is unparalleled. With multiple high-profile celebrities attending, UFC 239 was the place to be on Saturday night.
In the main event, champions Jon Jones managed to earn a split decision over challenger Thiago Santos, to the confusion of some fans. A notable moment during the fight was in the second round, when, after a leg kick, Santos seemed to have hurt his knee. This affected his performance in the later rounds drastically, but still managed to land clean shots and kicks. Fans believed that Jones didn’t look himself, as if he was holding back or not trying.
The community was split on the decision, with some thinking it was close, yet clear, decision for Jones. Others believed that with a successful 1st, 2nd and 5th round, Santos had done enough to snatch the belt from Jones.
Just falling shy of the top spot on the card, Amanda Nunes defended her title in impressive fashion. After a reserved start, Nunes began to unload on her opponent, former champion Holly Holm. The double-champion landed a head-kick, a move synonymous with Holm, that sent the 12-4 fighter to the mat. Nunes followed up with punches on the ground to get the TKO. ‘The Lioness’ has now beaten every female bantamweight champion.
