Fan-favourite Ben Askren made a name for himself in the welterweight division by beating the best-of-the-best outside of the UFC. ‘Funky‘ came out of retirement in 2018, when it was announced that ONE FC had traded Askren for Demetrious Johnson. Askren’s camp had no easy task ahead of them in the preparation for their first UFC bout, which came against Robbie Lawler. While it was very controversial, Askren finished Lawler in the first round via bulldog choke.
However, Askren’s title aspirations came crashing down when he was on the receiving end of the fastest KO in promotional history, courtesy of Jorge Masvidal. The top-ten welterweight has been quite open about his first professional defeat. Askren gave a very open assessment of the fight on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. See what he had to say below:
“I try not to think about it – I f****d my life’s dream,” said Askren. “Think about this – for nine years, I have tried to prove I am the best fighter in the world and am so close to doing that. So close. I let stupid Jorge Masvidal knee me in the head. I haven’t been knocked down in 19 fights, I didn’t get knocked down one time, then, I let this idiot knee me in the head and get knocked out. Now, I don’t get to chase the dream I had. Everything was working out so perfectly. Now, you keep trying to bring up the fact that I blew it. I have accepted the fact that I blew it, but, I try not to dwell on that fact.”
While it hasn’t been finalized, Askren is expected to return to action in a land he knows very well – Singapore. He has verbally agreed to fight Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Demian Maia. The event, which will take place on October 26th, would be only the 2nd venture to one of Asia’s biggest combat markets.
