Leon Edwards claims Jorge Masvidal turned down a fight, Masvidal disputes it

With the masterful victory of Colby Covington over Robbie Lawler, which secured him a title shot, #3 ranked contender Jorge Masvidal has been placed on the sidelines. It seemed that his 5-second KO of Ben Askren would line him up for his first crack at a UFC title, but now, that has been proven otherwise. Abraham Kawa – Masvidal’s manager – stated that his client’s next fight would only be against either the champion or Conor McGregor. However, there is another top contender that wants a crack at ‘Gamebred‘.

Leon Edwards was a relatively unknown name in the 170lb division during the early portion of 2018. At UFC Fight Night: Werdum vs Volkov, Edwards improved his win streak to 5, defeating Peter Sobotta at 4:59 into the third round. ‘Rocky‘ quickly made himself a draw when he called out Darren Till. Edwards’ biggest moment came not in a fight, but the post-fight interview of a fellow contender. Jorge Masvidal had silenced the O2 Arena with a shocking KO of Darren Till. A scuffle ensued with Edwards and Masvidal, with Masvidal deeming the punches that he landed during the brawl a ‘three piece and soda‘.

In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Edwards explained that both he and the UFC’s matchmaking team wanted to make the title eliminator bout with Masvidal. He then went on to say that Masvidal turned down the fight offer.

“The only fight that makes sense now is me and Masvidal, and that’s the fight that I want. I spoke to the UFC. They want the fight. I want the fight. But Masvidal is turning the fight down. They say he doesn’t want the fight, so I don’t know. I’m just here. I’ll be ready to go at the end of the year and hopefully get one of those fights. They’re saying Masvidal said no, he doesn’t want the fight.”

“He’s trying to outbid himself, saying he wants a stupid amount of money to fight. So I’m ready to go. I’m just waiting to see what happens, and so I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully we get the fight done.”

It didn’t take long for Masvidal’s management to reply to the Brit. See what Kawa had to say:
