Bellator 226: Bader vs Kongo

Bellator 226 takes place this Saturday in San Jose. The main even will see Ryan Bader defend his heavyweight title against Cheick Kongo. The co-main features a quarter final fight in the 145lb division between Daniel Straus and Derek Campos.

Ryan Bader (27-5) is currently the heavyweight and light heavyweight champion of Bellator. He became a double champion after knocking out Fedor Emelianenko the final of the heavyweight tournament in January of this year. Bader is currently on an 8 fight win streak and is a strong favourite with bookmakers going into his first heavyweight title defence.

Cheick Kongo (30-10-2) is on an impressive 8 fight win streak and is looking cause the upset and become the heavyweight champion at 44 years of age. Kongo had been vocal about being left out of the heavyweight tournament and believes this shot is long overdue and he is more than ready for the task ahead. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph he said;

“I’m not a kid anymore. My heart has turned to stone. I will do what I have to do. I want to make this story for myself, but there’s no pressure on me. I do this every day. I just need to make them realise I deserved this position.”

The co main event will show the 4th fight of the featherweight tournament and will see Daniel Straus (26-8) fights Derek Campos (19-9). Campos is currently on a 3 fight losing streak and will be looking to return to winning ways. Straus is looking to record back to back wins for the first time since defeating Patricio Pitbull in November 2015.

The other fights on the main card see the other 3 fights that make up the first half of the quarter finals of the featherweight tournament.

Pat Curran (23-8) vs. Adam Borics (13-0)

Emmanuel Sanchez (18-4) vs. Tywan Claxton (5-0)
