Despite being teammates at American Top Team in Florida, Dustin Poirier wants Colby Covington to be wary the next time he sees him around.
Covington has been at odds with teammates all week, calling fellow ATT fighter Jorge Masvidal a “jealous little b*tch” and picking against Dustin Poirier in his title fight with Khabib this past weekend. However it was at the UFC 242 post-fight press conference where Poirier really sounded off on Covington.
After being asked if he’d fight Masvidal for the “BMF belt”, Poirier responded:
“Jorge is a buddy of mine, I don’t sell out like f*cking Colby Covington and talk bad about people who I roll with…”
Covington was not pleased following Poirier’s statement, calling his comments “very distasteful.”
“I’m not a sellout, I bought in and he tapped out. And that’s what happened,” Covington said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. “I had to give the people America’s pick of the week. I had to give my honest opinion… Sorry I can’t have an opinion. We don’t have the same opinion and I just obviously knew Khabib was the better fighter.”
Covington admits that himself and Poirier had never really been friends, and haven’t trained together in a long time. But if they do run into each other at ATT anytime soon, Poirier warns that their beef will be on sight.
“Chaos” doesn’t seem too worried about Poirier’s warning, however.
“Yeah, he trains at the same team,” Covington said about Poirier. “I am thankful to this gym, Dan Lambert and everything he does for us, but everyone knows this is an individual sport. We are individual contractors, I am out here to get mine and not to make friends. I am here to make money.”
