In a recent conversation with TMZ Sports, UFC president Dana White stated that he’d be open to a potential super-fight between GSP and Khabib. White made it clear that Tony Ferguson is still next in line for the lightweight title shot.
“Tony Ferguson is the fight that needs to happen, we’ve tried to do it four other times so hopefully we can get it done this time.”
The UFC president then opened up the possibility of a fight between GSP and Khabib.
“Tony has had opportunities before that he didn’t take, so if he doesn’t, then I would be interested in talking about GSP.”
It’s no secret that the current lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and former middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, are interested in a fight with each other. These two are known as some of the best wrestlers the sport has ever seen; and for them it’s more about the challenge than the money. Both fighters have a lot on the line legacy wise if they fought, especially Khabib who boasts a 28-0 record.
St Pierre has come out of retirement once before, capturing the middleweight belt from Michael Bisping back at UFC 217. This put him on a short list of fighters who’ve won belts in different weight classes.
Khabib’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, recently told TMZ Sports that GSP should be next for Khabib. He explained why the fight with GSP should be next instead of Tony Ferguson.
“I think him (Khabib), and Georges St. Pierre would make a lot more money, a lot more headlines, people will care more.”
