Eddie Alvarez announces withdrawal from ONE’s Grand Prix

While the coin of fate may have landed in the Philadelphian’s favour earlier this year, it has not been so kind, recently.

Ex-UFC star Eddie Alvarez broke the shocking news that he had withdrew from the ONE Championship lightweight grand-prix on Thursday evening. His Tweet read, “My apologies, I am gutted , I can hold my head up and say with all honesty I gave this opportunity my all . I wanted this as bad as anything I ever wanted but for some reason it’s not my time right now . It’s time to rest and heal and come back stronger .

A former multi-promotional champion, Philly’s Alvarez is coming off of an impressive stoppage victory victory over Eduard Folayang. Following that win, Alvarez was placed into the finals of the 170lbs grand-prix he was competing in. Before that, he was eliminated in the opening round against Timofey Nastyuhkin.

ONE lightweight champion Christian Lee will now fight Alvarez’ former opponent, Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev. The fight is set to go down at ONE: Century, a stacked card that is scheduled for October 13th.
