Jared ‘The Killa Gorilla‘ Cannonier proved has rightfully that he is no stepping stone to the title.
The American entered his middleweight bout with Jack Hermansson as a +230 underdog. This was Cannonier’s second straight time fighting in enemy territory, the previous being against Anderson Silva at UFC 237.
The fight began with both men eagerly sprinting to the center of the cage. Hermansson wasted no time whatsoever, shooting for a takedown early on. The Swede would win the grappling exchanges with relative comfort. The striking exchanges, on the contrary, were fairly even.
Early on in the second round, Cannonier would land a thunderous rear uppercut, wobbling his opponent. Forward pressure from Cannonier then sent Hermansson to the canvas. With the hometown favourite absorbing many unanswered punches, referee Marc Goddard waved off the contest, 27 seconds into the 2nd round.
Cannonier will likely overtake Hermansson’s spot at number 5 in the official UFC rankings.
