Israel Adesanya becomes undisputed champion with 2nd round KO

The continent of Africa has its second undisputed UFC champion.

Both Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya had the intention of unifying their respective middleweight titles, when entering MARVEL Stadium. The night would ultimately end in favour of the interim champion, Adesanya. Here’s how it went down:

The first round opened with decent strikes being thrown from both men. Whittaker began landing leg kicks on his opponent, while ‘Stylebender‘ kept his distance. With only seconds to go in the round, Adesanya dropped the Aussie with a vicious right hand. Initially, commentator Jon Anik mistook the end of the round for a TKO win.

Round 2 began with a more cautious approach from the champion. Both men appeared to be doing well with their boxing and were landing solid punches. Just past the mid-way mark, Adesanya connected with a flush left hook that sent ‘The Reaper‘ tumbling to the canvas. Referee Marc Goddard called a halt to the bout and Adesanya was crowned as the undisputed champion.

The new champ got into a heated verbal dispute with title contender Paulo Costa. Adesanya acknowledged that the Brazilian is next in line for a title shot. Costa is coming off of a decision victory over Yoel Romero.
